Will it hurt my jaw or teeth?

Light soreness is possible in the first few days. Your jaw may feel slightly forward when you wake up, and that fades after you take the mouthguard out. Start at neutral. If your jaw or teeth are sore, move the lower tray halfway back toward neutral. Possible effects include tooth movement or a change in your bite, sore gums or teeth, a sore jaw joint, extra saliva, and harder breathing through the mouth. Stop using it and see your dentist if you have pain, loose or moving teeth, or discomfort that doesn’t go away.

Who should not use Silentrin?

Silentrin is not a treatment for sleep apnea. If you have been told you have sleep apnea, or you think you might, talk to your doctor before using it. Don’t use it if you have or may have central sleep apnea. Also don’t use it if you have a severe breathing condition such as asthma or emphysema, a jaw joint disorder (TMD), jaw pain or clicking, loose teeth or advanced gum disease, braces or orthodontic treatment, or a dental implant placed in the past 12 months. Silentrin is for adults 18 and older. Before you start, ask your dentist or doctor for an oral health check to make sure it suits you.

Does it fit everyone?

Silentrin comes in one size. Molding shapes the lining to your own teeth, but every mouth is different, and it may not fit everyone. If it doesn’t fit you, the 60-night guarantee applies.

675 women in a study of 1,913 patients referred to a sleep center. Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, 2019. In the same study, average peak volume was 50 dB for women and 51.7 dB for men. These women had been referred to a sleep center, so this doesn’t mean 88% of all women snore. It shows how often women underreport it. [1]

We started by reading.

Posts from people who snore, and a 2019 study of women referred to a sleep center, kept pointing the same way: women snore more than they say. So we started Silentrin with one question. Could you test this principle at home, from $49.99?

What the 2015 guideline says

In 2015, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine issued a joint guideline. It recommends that sleep physicians prescribe oral appliances, rather than no therapy, for adults who request treatment of primary snoring, and says a sleep physician should diagnose primary snoring, because snoring often comes with sleep apnea. [2]

The guideline covers oral appliances as a category, mostly made by a dentist. It does not evaluate Silentrin, which is a boil-and-bite device: not custom-made, not prescribed and not fitted by a dentist. These organizations are not affiliated with Silentrin and have not reviewed it.

During sleep, the jaw can drift back.

The muscles that hold everything in place relax. The lower jaw drifts back and the tongue follows. The airway behind them narrows, and air moving through that narrow space makes the soft tissue vibrate.

Think of a doorstop. It doesn’t push the door. It keeps the door from swinging shut. Silentrin is designed to do that for your jaw.

One tray fits over the upper teeth, one over the lower. They are connected, so they work together to hold the position you set.

A small key sets how far forward the lower jaw sits. You start at neutral and move forward one step at a time, at your own pace.

Boil-and-bite

You soften it in boiling water, then bite down. It takes the shape of your own teeth. You do it at home, in about 3 minutes once the water is boiling.

Fit it in four steps

You’ll need a pot of water, kitchen tongs, a mug of cold water, a timer that shows seconds and a mirror. Bring the water to a low boil.

  1. Heat

    With the tongs, lower it into boiling water for 60 seconds.

  2. Mold

    Dip it in cold water for 3 seconds. Place it in your mouth with the UP arrow facing up and bite down firmly for 30 seconds.

  3. Set

    Hold it in cold water for 30 seconds.

  4. Adjust

    Start at neutral. After a few nights, use the key to turn each screw to the same mark on the scale, moving the lower tray forward one small step at a time.

Will it stay in all night?

There is no strap: two connected trays grip your upper and lower teeth after molding. Every mouth is different, so we can’t promise it for every sleeper, and the 60-night guarantee is there if it doesn’t work out for you.

What if I get the molding wrong?

Put it back in boiling water for 60 seconds, then mold it again from the start. If it still does not fit after a second try, write to us: the 60-night guarantee covers it.

Should I see a dentist first?

Yes, we recommend a quick oral health check first. It matters most if you have jaw pain or clicking, loose teeth, gum disease or new dental work.

Will my partner notice it?

In bed it looks like a night guard, and we won’t pretend nobody can see it. By day it stays in its ventilated case, stored like a toothbrush.

Can two people use one kit?

No. It is molded to one person’s teeth, so each person needs their own. Two of The Hush cost $79.98 in your cart, $20 less than two separate ones.

What comes in each kit?

What is it made of?

An ABS structure with a silicone lining. Its specifications list both as food-grade.

How do I clean it?

After each use, rinse it in cold water. Brush it gently with a soft toothbrush and toothpaste, rinse again, dry it and keep it in its case. Use cold water: hot water softens the lining. You can also soak it in denture cleaner.

What if it doesn’t work for me?
