How Silentrin works

Where snoring starts, how the adjustment works, how to fit it, and what to expect from night 1 to night 60.

A woman holding the two-tray mouthguard at a bright kitchen counter, with a pot of steaming water and kitchen tongs beside her.

Where snoring starts.

Snoring comes from soft parts of the mouth, throat and nose vibrating as you breathe. According to the NHS, these parts relax and narrow when you are asleep. [5]

The lower jaw is part of that picture. When the muscles relax, the jaw can drift back and the tongue follows. The airway behind them narrows, and air moving through a narrow space makes soft tissue vibrate.

Think of a doorstop. It doesn’t push the door. It keeps the door from swinging shut. Silentrin is designed to do that for your jaw.

Where the jaw is not the cause

Snoring has more than one cause. The NHS lists a blocked or narrow nose, drinking alcohol, sleeping on your back, being overweight and smoking, and the mouth falling open during sleep. A jaw-forward mouthguard is aimed at one of these, not all of them. See the full list

Two stacked panels, before and after: a woman lying on her back in side profile, first without the mouthguard, then with the white-and-blue mouthguard between her lips, with the airway highlighted in each panel.
Top: without the mouthguard. Bottom: with it. Not a result.
Not sure snoring is the whole story?

If you have chronic nasal congestion, jaw joint problems, or loud snoring with gasping or heavy daytime sleepiness, talk to a doctor or dentist first. Take the 30-second check

The adjustment: you set it, one step at a time.

The lower tray sits at neutral to begin with. A small key moves it forward in small steps, and back if you need it to.

  1. Start at neutral

The first nights, the lower tray stays at neutral. Nothing is pushing your jaw forward.

  2. Move one step

After a few nights, turn each screw to the same mark on the scale, on both sides. The lower tray moves forward one small step.

  3. Back off if you need to

If your jaw or teeth are sore, move the lower tray halfway back toward neutral. You decide how far, and when.

While you sleep: the idea in four steps.

This is how the design is meant to work. Every sleeper is different, so the 60-night guarantee lets you find out for yourself.

  1. The jaw is held

Two connected trays grip your upper and lower teeth, so the lower jaw stays where you set it. There is no strap.

  2. The tongue has less room to fall back

The tongue follows the jaw. Holding the jaw forward is designed to keep the tongue from dropping back.

  3. The airway is less likely to narrow

That is what “to help keep the airway open” means in our description.

  4. Less narrowing, less to vibrate

Snoring is vibration in a narrow space. That is the logic the design follows.

Fit it in four steps.

About 3 minutes once the water is boiling. Start when the water is at a low boil and your mug of cold water is ready.

You’ll need

  • A pot of water
  • Kitchen tongs
  • A mug of cold water
  • A timer that shows seconds, such as the one on your phone
  • A mirror

Boiling water can burn. Use tongs. Before you start, ask your dentist or doctor for an oral health check to make sure it suits you.

Kitchen still life for the molding step: a pot of steaming water, kitchen tongs holding the mouthguard above it, a mug of cold water and a plain white timer.
  1. Heat · 60 seconds

Bring the water to a low boil. Find the upper tray: it has an UP arrow. With the tongs, lower the mouthguard into the boiling water for 60 seconds.

  2. Cold dip · 3 seconds

Dip it in the cold water for 3 seconds.

  3. Bite · 30 seconds

Place it in your mouth with the UP arrow facing up. Look in the mirror, center it, and bite down firmly for 30 seconds.

  4. Set · 30 seconds

Take it out and hold it in cold water for 30 seconds. Then start at neutral.

If the fit is off, put it back in boiling water for 60 seconds and mold it again. If it still does not fit after a second try, write to us: the 60-night guarantee covers it.

What to expect: night 1, week 1, night 60.

A realistic picture of the first weeks. Everyone’s jaw adjusts at its own pace.

  1. Night 1Start at neutralLight soreness is possible in the first few days. Your jaw may feel slightly forward when you wake up, and that fades after you take the mouthguard out. Extra saliva is possible at first.
  2. Week 1Small steps, if you chooseAfter a few nights, you can move forward one step, the same mark on both sides. If your jaw or teeth are sore, move the lower tray halfway back toward neutral.
  3. Any nightStop if something is wrongStop using it and see your dentist if you have pain, loose or moving teeth, or discomfort that doesn’t go away.
  4. Night 60Your decisionThe last night to ask for a refund. Full refund, nothing to send back.

The parts.

Dual tray
One tray fits over the upper teeth, one over the lower. They are connected, so they work together to hold the position you set.
Calibration key
A small key turns a screw on each side. Each screw goes to a mark on the scale, the same mark on both sides.
Boil-and-bite
You soften it in boiling water, then bite down. It takes the shape of your own teeth, at home.
What it’s made of
An ABS structure with a silicone lining. Its specifications list both as food-grade. The lining is the part that takes the shape of your teeth.
Size
Silentrin comes in one size. Molding shapes the lining to your own teeth, but every mouth is different, and it may not fit everyone. If it doesn’t fit you, the 60-night guarantee applies.

How it compares.

Silentrin is a different kind of device from one made by a dentist. Here is what differs, in plain terms.

Silentrin applies the same jaw-forward principle at home, molded and adjusted by you. It does not replace a dentist’s care. What the 2015 guideline says

Keep it clean.

  1. Rinse

Rinse it in cold water after each use. Hot water softens the lining.

  2. Brush

Brush it gently with a soft toothbrush and toothpaste.

  3. Rinse and dry

Rinse it again and dry it.

  4. Store

Keep it in its ventilated case, like a toothbrush.

You can also soak it in denture cleaner. The Fresh adds a dual-head cleaning brush, and The Ritual adds the brush and an ultrasonic cleaner.

What the extras are

Dual-head cleaning brush (The Fresh and The Ritual)
A brush made for cleaning the mouthguard, with two heads. Use it in your daily routine, in place of a soft toothbrush: brush gently with toothpaste, rinse in cold water, dry, and store it in its case.
Ultrasonic cleaner (The Ritual)
A compact cleaner, 50 kHz, 200 ml tank, battery included. It is for a deeper clean on top of the daily rinse and brush. Fill it with cold water, because hot water softens the lining, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Choose your kit

Before you start.

Ask your dentist or doctor for an oral health check to make sure it suits you. Silentrin is not a treatment for sleep apnea. If you have been told you have sleep apnea, or you think you might, talk to your doctor before using it. Silentrin is for adults 18 and older. Keep it out of reach of children.

Don’t use it if you have or may have

  • central sleep apnea
  • a severe breathing condition such as asthma or emphysema
  • a jaw joint disorder (TMD), jaw pain or clicking
  • loose teeth or advanced gum disease
  • braces or orthodontic treatment
  • a dental implant placed in the past 12 months

Possible effects

Tooth movement or a change in your bite, sore gums or teeth, a sore jaw joint, extra saliva, and harder breathing through the mouth.

Loud snoring with gasping or choking, or heavy daytime sleepiness, can be signs of sleep apnea. If that sounds like you, see a doctor.
